We are home!

We are home now! Yay! I was due to come home on Dec 2nd but my blood pressure went up and pre-eclampsia set in. Not fun! We look at it as a blessing in disguise since Liam wasn't ready to come home. He was still in the Special Care Nursery as a "feeder and grower" since he dropped down to 4 pounds from his birth weight of 4 lbs 3 oz. He's a pokey little eater but has improved a lot.
So luckily when they were releasing me on Friday the 5th, he got to come home too. We were so thrilled! As prepared as we were to know we may not come home with all 3 at once, we didn't realize what a toll it takes on your emotions when the time comes.

Now being parents, we understand what people mean when they describe the love you have for your child. What an amazing transformation your heart takes in that instant when you hear their first cries.

Coming home was a little rougher than we thought. No more putting the babies in the nursery at night to get sleep. It's all on us now! The first night was rough. I was so exhausted and we decided to keep the babies in our room. I was awake for every sound they made and Michael and I for each feeding. Saturday was not a good day for me with lack of sleep and my nerves on edge. I was so overtired I couldn't even nap which made things worse. Sunday I fared a little better only running on 4 hours of sleep. Last night I had the most sleep so far and was actually able to fall asleep for a short time after their 3 am feeding.

Michael is doing well with his sleep but does need to rest more. He's off this week but we are trying to get into the groove of a real schedule so when he goes back to work, his routine has minimal disruption.

My mom has been a true God send helping us out these past few days. We could not have done it without her. Just eating takes a back seat and she has been cooking for us, helping with feedings and doing laundry. Who knew how much laundry babies go through in a day!

Michael has been doing great in his role as a new dad. He hasn't quite gotten the hang of doing a feed/diaper change all on his own yet and gets frustrated with the clothes they were. But he's been doing just fine in my eyes.

We'll be posting some more pictures soon once I can upload them. Hopefully later today but we'll have to see. The babies have their first visit to the pediatrician today for a quick once over since they were born small. Their real appointment will be in another week or two.

As for visitors, we aren't quite up for a house full just yet but will be able to have small short visits soon. The hospital pediatrician has given us strict instructions about visitors in this cold and flu season. Although the babies are not considered preemies, they are smaller and very suseptable (sp?) to colds, flu and more dangerously, RSV.

Thank you all for your cards, wonderful bllog comments and telephone calls. We apologize for not being able to recongnize you all right now but know they mean a lot to us.

Love and hugs!
Mike and Dee

Hey Deanna

I'm sure your pediatrician will do this (they usually do for newborns!) but if not mandate it.... whenever you go to the pediatrician make sure they take you and the babies into the exam room as soon as you get there to avoid any exposure to sick babies in the waiting room. Alex went for a well visit on a Friday and there was an RSV baby in the waiting room (she was NOT good). The following Friday we were in an ambulance headed towards the hospital with Alex sick with RSV. If your pediatrician doesn't do this - we try, if possible, to go with two adults to the doctors office - one waits in the car with the baby until they are ready to take him/her into the exam room - then we bring them in. Just my experience but with the sickies now going to the doctor's office you want to keep yours AWAY! Take care and we love you ..... Kirk and Caroline

Glad to hear that you're home with your babies! Sounds like things are going as expected with newborns! Lack of sleep is to be expected, but don't worry, they'll figure out that nightime is for sleeping soon enough. Get rest when you can. I can imagine that's difficult when you have a newborn x 3! Call me if you need anything. XOXO Sylvia
